Dear Form 1 – 5 Parents,
In order to help students develop further their understanding of the Silk Road, its rich culture and history, and its future development, the La Salle College Parent Teacher Association is organizing a study tour ‘Back to the Future’ the Silk Road (Dunhuang - Lanzhou) from 11th to 18th July, 2016. The study tour is a joint project with St Paul’s Secondary School Parent-Teacher Association and is to be assisted by the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR. Most probably we will be the first group of Hong Kong students visiting the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center (酒泉卫星发射中心) which is not opened to visitors in general.
The group will start the journey from Dunhuang and travel towards Lanzhou. The tour will include visits to famous sights such as the Mogao Caves, Mingsha Shan, Yueyaquan, and Jiayu Pass. In addition, the tour will include visits to spectacular cultural sites such as the Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, Binggou Danxia, Wuwei Grand Buddha Temple, Wuwei Wu Temple, Confucius Temple, Mother of the Yellow River Statue, Lanzhou Waterwheel Park, and the Yellow River Bridge.
To extend participants’ understanding of the history of the Silk Road, the group will also visit museums such as the Dunhuang Museum, Gansu Provincial Museum, Jiayuguan Wei and Jin Tombs, and Leitai Han Tombs. Through a seminar to be conducted by an archaeologists on the tour participants will have an intensive understanding of the remarkable history and culture of the Mogao Caves. A visit to the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center will be a highlight of the tour as participants will observe in person the high-tech development of China and her space industry.
Project learning is to be embedded on this tour. Students will need to conduct small scale research projects. Their learning outcomes will be appraised by teachers and parents after the tour. For further details please refer to the preamble and tentative itinerary attached.
The estimation of the tour cost will be around HK$9,800. However, it may vary according to actual needs and logistical arrangements. The charge will cover all necessary expenses of the trip and part of teacher leaders’ expenses (according to 1:10 ratio). Any surplus or deficit will be shared by participants. Applicants attaining financial assistance from the Student Financial Assistance Agency (SFAA) or Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) Scheme please indicate in your application for possible subsidy from our Parent Teacher Association. Please also note that it is Lasallian philosophy that no one will be deprived of the opportunity of joining programmes or activities for financial reasons.
All parents of Form 1 - 5 students are invited to apply if they wish their son to join this programme. If over-subscribed the normal selection process will be applied by teachers and cheques will be refunded to those unsuccessful applicants.
